The situation for homeless youth in Berlin became almost impossible during COVID-19.

We were asked to film, photograph and interview some of the volunteers and experts who offered much needed support during the pandemic – many of them with lived experience from life on the street.

The risks homeless youth normally faced on the streets became higher during the pandemic. Therefore, early on during the pandemic, Save the Children and the KARUNA Social Cooperative joined forces in an emergency response project.

An estimated 37,000 children and young people in Germany are homeless. They live and sleep on the street, with friends, or in emergency shelters. Many of them in Berlin. In the video we meet volunteers and staff that saw how the pandemic affected homeless young people.

The local knowledge and presence of KARUNA, combined with the emergency response experience and resources of Save the Children, enabled the programme to deliver quickly and effectively, reaching hundreds of homeless youths.
